From the archives

I’ve discovered the US National Archives flickr stream. And on that stream are a great many Mathew Brady photographs whose use is reported as ‘unrestricted’.

This means I can create art from them. Here is a couple from the Civil War period – created in Photoshop, as always:

  1. The couple is really very well done. I love it.

    I love to think of the genderquake hitting in the 19th century at the peak of the patriarchy. I can see the patriarch above stripped of his suit and shoes and stuffed into the dress and forced to sit demurely and politely instead of standing in his macho posture.
