Poor Daniel was hauled into detention after school by the Fifth Year prefect after she spotted him breaking school rules by wearing eye shadow.
A prefect is a pupil who has been given limited authority over other pupils in the school. It was an outmoded role, generally associated with public school*, until it was revived during the genderquake to give girls an opportunity to exercise authority from a young age. Prefects were elected by their peers, but only girls ever occupied the role as the candidates had to be members of that year’s pupil council, and boys hardly ever stood for positions of responsibility, let alone actually getting them.
* For U.S. readers, that means a private school – confusingly!
