Captain Georgia Coussmaker

Georgia Coussmaker was a lieutenant and captain in the first regiment of Foot Guards. Her portrait was painted in 1782.

Digital painting mainly after Joshua Reynolds.

  1. Another irresistible example of the genderquake - if it happened in the 1770s!

I love that Joshua Reynolds painting - the gentleman is so utterly confident and assured in his masculinity and his aristocratic white male privilege. So calm and dignified and impeccable.

Then the change - he is stripped of his career and his house and his privileges. And his wife takes his uniform and his boots, his hat and his horse. Lovely.

No longer so confident as he becomes accustomed to the domestic life.
